Malawi Council for the Handicapped (Macoha) senior rehabilitation officer Yunus Dickson has encouraged learners with disabilities from Senior Chief Chilooko in Ntchisi District to work hard to achieve their goals.

He said this on Thursday at Malomo Trading Centre in the district during a confidence building interaction between learners and officers from the district council.

Yunus said learners with disabilities should not take their physical challenge as a drawback, but as an opportunity to prove that they are equally capable of achieving their dreams just like anyone else.

He said: “Most people with disabilities are capable of achieving great things in society, but they suffer an inferiority complex due to discouraging sentiments from society regarding their state of disability.”

Ntchisi district youth officer Grey Kalampa urged parents of children with disabilities to play a leading role in encouraging them to always maintain a positive attitude and work on improving their potential.

“Apart from school, you also need to encourage the children to build on their technical skills,” he said.

Kalampa said local authorities should implement initiatives to ensure that such encouraging messages spread to as many learners with disabilities as possible in the area.

Senior Chief Chilooko urged the need to engage representatives of people with disabilities in area development committees to address issues involving their welfare on time.

With support from Hope and Healing International, Macoha organised the meeting to encourage the learners to continue building on their intellectual and technical skills despite facing stereotypes.

The event, which included poetry recitals, traditional dances and drama performances, started with a solidarity walk from Malomo Police Station to Senior Chief Chilooko’s court with placards carrying ‘Disability is not Inability’ message
